OK, so Laramie is no Hawaii. But the Wyoming volleyball team and new head coach Carrie Yerty are more than happy to be home.
For Yerty, it will be home for the first time in her Wyoming career.
“I think it will be really exciting to be home for me; it will be the first match that I will get to be a part of in the UniWyo and in Laramie. I’m really looking forward to the environment and the community support,” Yerty said.
The Cowgirls, after two weeks on the road at Corvallis, Ore., and Honolulu, will open the home part of their schedule this weekend with the annual UniWyo Cowgirl Classic.
Action begins Friday morning at 10 a.m. when the Cowgirls host Kansas. The Cowgirls will also face Alabama-Birmingham Friday at 7:30 p.m. and close the tournament Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Cleveland State.
It’s been a rough start for the Cowgirls, 0-6 in the two tournaments. At the same time, Yerty is pleased with the team’s progress.
“I think that starting off 0-6 is tough, especially when you have a team returning where we don’t have anybody but Tasha (Weishahn) or Carissa (Lee) who have any significant playing time. Every time you step out on the court, it is a learning experience,” Yerty said. “Our team, right now, do we want to win? Absolutely. Are we looking forward to celebrating that first victory? Yes.”
Last weekend was a good experience for the team, Yerty said, in terms of having the opportunity to go to Hawaii and play in front of 5,000 fans.
“Hawaii and Minnesota were ranked No. 11 and 12, so for a program that is seeking that for a final destination, to see those two teams at that elite level, is a great experience,” she said. “The fans in Hawaii are just incredible. They understand the game and they appreciate good volleyball. Regardless of which team played well or which team scored, they did a really good job of supporting all of the teams at the tournament. For me, I definitely want our team to see that level of play, because that is the direction that we want to head.”
Kansas, 4-2 this season, is led by Karina Garlington, who is averaging 3.95 kills and 1.60 digs per set. Kansas returns six starters and 11 letterwinners on a team that went 13-17 overall and 6-14 in the Big 12 Conference a year ago.
“Kansas is a Big 12 team and they are very reportable in terms of their program,” Yerty said. “They are going to return a good, solid squad. For us to compete or possibly take a game or win a match against Kansas, it would be huge.”
The UAB Blazers are currently 3-2 overall and will play Cleveland State before taking on the Cowgirls. UAB is led by Ivana Bozic, who is averaging 3.33 kills and 3.56 digs. They return five starters and 10 letterwinners to a team that went 24-10 overall and 12-4 in Conference USA a year ago.
“Alabama-Birmingham was in Conference USA when I was there. They have competed for conference championships three out of the last four years and have an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Tournament,” Yerty said. “Again, you’re talking about a very quality, experienced team. They are going to be deep, they are going to be experienced. For us to challenge or take a game or match from Alabama-Birmingham would also be very good.”
Cleveland State is 1-5 overall and will play UAB and Kansas before taking on the Cowgirls. The Vikings are led by Beth Greulich, who is averaging 2.45 kills a game. Cleveland State went 23-9 overall and 13-3 in the Horizon League a year ago.
“Cleveland State is kind of in the same situation that we are in,” Yerty said. “They had a slow start. That might be an opportunity for us to relax and compete at a level that is a little bit more even across the board.”
The Cowgirls are currently led by outside hitter Dani Bedore, who is averaging 2.45 kills and 1.27 per set. She is followed by sophomore Lauren Whitney, who is adding 2.27 kills and almost one dig per set. As a team, they are averaging 9.86 kills and 11.73 digs per set.
“I’m really proud of how the team is competing,” Yerty said. “I’m really proud of how they are handling adversity with Tilly (sophomore Chantilly Watson) out for the year. This team, they have a lot of heart and they have a lot of pride. That’s a starting point. We’ve discussed a lot on this team that the seniors are laying a foundation for the future of our program. When they leave here, they will be a part of the reason this program continues to succeed and grow. That is our starting point, as well as learning the game, the offense and my terminology.”

Other teams competing in the three-day invitational include Colorado State, Montana State, Northern Colorado and Weber State.
“It was a good start for us and we were able to play a good amount of tennis,” newly named UW head coach Kati Gyulai said. “Under the circumstances with the weather, I felt the players really battled through each match. We still have a lot of room for improvement, but we will work on those things the rest of the weekend and practice next week.”
In doubles play, the teams of Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield, along with Brittney DeFelice and Carly Van Hollen had solid matches. Berger and Summerfield defeated Kirsten Stople and Tori Arneson (Colorado State), 8-4, and Tabatha Knop and Manuela Santos (Northern Colorado), 8-4. Unfortunately, they fell short 8-6 against the team of Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen. DeFelice and Van Hollen also won their first two matches, 8-6, over Tiffany Knop and Hannah La Forest of Northern Colorado and 8-5 against Stephanie Jasper and Missy Harris of Montana State. They too fell short with an 8-3 loss to McKenzie Hilmer and Ali Griffin of Montana State.
In other doubles action, Jamie Nelson and Virginia Iwinski fell to Katie Brown and Greer Satherlie (CSU), 9-7, as did Carolina Chaix and Ronnie Spencer against Luiza Xavier and Jill Kappel (UNC), 8-2.

UW to induct 2008 Hall of Fame class

Three football standouts, a champion hurdler, a two-sport All-American, a champion wrestler, and a very successful women's basketball team comprise the latest class of the University of Wyoming Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. The Class of 2008 will be honored at a banquet on Friday.
The sold-out dinner and induction ceremony for the Hall of Fame's 16th class will be at the UW Conference Center Hilton Garden Inn ballroom. Then on Saturday, the newest members of the UW Athletics Hall of Fame will be introduced at halftime of the Wyoming-North Dakota State football game.
The inductees include Thomas "Rupe" Garrison, a hurdler who won five conference championships during his career; Walker "Sonny" Jones, Jr., a productive running back and kick returner; Geir I. Kvernmo, an All-American in both Track and Skiing; Brian J. Lee, an All-American free safety; Dave Myers, UW's only four-time conference champion wrestler; Steve Scifres, one of the greatest offensive linemen ever to wear the Wyoming uniform; and the 1978-79 Women's Basketball team, coached by Margie McDonald to a record of 25-7.
"As is the case every year, we are extremely proud of this class," said Ken Cook, chairman of the Hall of Fame committee "This group certainly left its mark on the university and the state of Wyoming."
A total of 97 individuals and eight teams have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1993. Its plaque display is located on the second floor of the Rochelle Athletics Center.
The Hall of Fame Committee met in January to make its final selections for this year's class. The inductees must fit into one of five categories: student-athlete, coach, team, athletics staff members or special achievement. Special achievement includes individuals who have contributed to the ideal of sports at the University. Each nominee must receive at least 75 percent of the committee's vote to be eligible for induction.
Members of the committee are: Ken Cook (chairman), Ron Flack, Stig Hallingbye, Dave Madia, Margie McDonald, Kevin McKinney, Molly Moore, Brian Morgen, Lisa Skiles Parady, Bruce Pivic, Mike Schutte and Dave Walsh.

The Wyoming tennis team will open the 2008-2009 season this weekend as they host the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational, Thursday through Saturday at the UW Tennis Complex.

The Cowgirls, under new head coach Kati Gyulai, welcome back six letterwinners, along with four starters, and two talented newcomers. Last season the Cowgirls went 11-13 overall and had a 1-7 mark in the Mountain West Conference play. The 11 victories tied a school record for most wins which was set during the 1996-97 season.
The squad is composed of one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. Several individuals will be looked upon to help the Cowgirls in 2008-09, including junior Sarah Summerfield and second-year players Brittany DeFelice and Rebecca Berger. Summerfield went 14-7 overall during her sophomore campaign after returning from an injury. DeFelice finished her first year with the team 14-3 overall at the number six spot, while Berger capped things off with a 16-19 mark playing at the number one position.
Other key players who will also be in the mix are senior Jamie Nelson, junior Carolina Chaix and sophomore Carly Van Hollen. The only senior on the team this year, Nelson went 6-8 in singles play and 12-12 in doubles. Chaix went 7-6 in limited action, while Van Hollen wrapped up her first year with a 10-22 mark. The Cowgirls will welcome two newcomers to the program in Virginia Iwinski and Ronnie Spencer. Iwinski was a two-time letterwinner in tennis while attending Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga. Spencer, from Caproel, Canada, is a two-time Scotia McLead Mid Canada Open Champion in the U18 and Women's Open categories.
Colorado State went 9-11 overall a year ago, while finishing with a 2-6 mark in the MWC. They are coached by Jon Messick.
Montana State went 12-6 overall and 6-2 in the Big Sky Conference last season. They are coached by Denise Albrecht, who is in her eighth season with the program.
Northern Colorado finished 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. UNC is coach by Brenda Vlasak, who is in her sixth season with the program.
Weber State finished with a 7-15 overall record and 1-6 in the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats are coached by Jonas Ehrlin who is in his second season with the women’s program.
The squad is composed of one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. Several individuals will be looked upon to help the Cowgirls in 2008-09, including junior Sarah Summerfield and second-year players Brittany DeFelice and Rebecca Berger. Summerfield went 14-7 overall during her sophomore campaign after returning from an injury. DeFelice finished her first year with the team 14-3 overall at the number six spot, while Berger capped things off with a 16-19 mark playing at the number one position.
Other key players who will also be in the mix are senior Jamie Nelson, junior Carolina Chaix and sophomore Carly Van Hollen. The only senior on the team this year, Nelson went 6-8 in singles play and 12-12 in doubles. Chaix went 7-6 in limited action, while Van Hollen wrapped up her first year with a 10-22 mark. The Cowgirls will welcome two newcomers to the program in Virginia Iwinski and Ronnie Spencer. Iwinski was a two-time letterwinner in tennis while attending Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga. Spencer, from Caproel, Canada, is a two-time Scotia McLead Mid Canada Open Champion in the U18 and Women's Open categories.
Colorado State went 9-11 overall a year ago, while finishing with a 2-6 mark in the MWC. They are coached by Jon Messick.
Montana State went 12-6 overall and 6-2 in the Big Sky Conference last season. They are coached by Denise Albrecht, who is in her eighth season with the program.
Northern Colorado finished 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. UNC is coach by Brenda Vlasak, who is in her sixth season with the program.
Weber State finished with a 7-15 overall record and 1-6 in the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats are coached by Jonas Ehrlin who is in his second season with the women’s program.
