Cowgirls lose to James Madison

By Wyoming Sports.org

After a strong second-half performance, the Wyoming Cowgirls couldn’t catch up to the James Madison Dukes, losing 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

"We aren’t happy with a loss, but James Madison is a quality team,’ Wyoming coach Danny Sanchez said. “In the second half, we played smarter and more aggressive and that is something to build on for our next game.”

The Dukes took the lead at the 21:08 mark when junior Ashley Flateland scored on an unassisted goal to give James Madison the lead. Later in the first half senior Lindsay Bowers scored the second goal of the half for the Dukes on an assist from Rachel Chupein in the 33rd minute.

The second half started with good defense from Wyoming, and in the 59th minute, junior Emily Layton scored on an assist from Amanda Lathrop. The play gave Layton her third goal of the season, while Lathrop now has six assists.

"Emily was one of the better players on the field in the first half and scored a great goal in the second half ,’ Sanchez said. “As a team, everyone played with more energy and focus in the second half. We will need to continue to do that if we are going to be a successful team down the road.”

Senior goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff had eight saves throughout the game and kept the score within reach after the Layton goal.

"Jamie played well after halftime and kept us in the game when we were trying to get that second goal," Sanchez said.

The Cowgirls will host Montana on Sunday at noon. The Grizzlies come to Laramie 0-4 after losing to Denver on Friday afternoon.
